About Saint Jovan Šangajski

Serbian First Responders are a network of volunteers who never look away when someone is in trouble – we respond quickly, calmly, and with solidarity in critical moments. Through unity, knowledge, and dedication, we strengthen the culture of mutual support and build a society where kindness comes before reward.

Saint JOVAN ŠANGAJSKI and SANFRANCISKANSKI (1896 - 1966)

Born as Mikhail Maximovich in Russia and tonsured as Father John in Serbia, he served God and people in China, Western Europe, and the United States. Throughout his ministry, he was devoted to helping the sick, the poor, and orphaned children. In Shanghai, he founded orphanages that provided a home for more than 3,500 Chinese children. In difficult and seemingly hopeless situations, he aided those in need, often in ways that could not be rationally explained, earning him the title of “miracle worker.”

He was a swift helper to people of all faiths and nations, tirelessly responding to those in their most challenging moments. For this reason, Serbian First Responders  honor him as their patron and are dedicated to preserving the memory of the life and work of Saint John of Shanghai.

Help us save more lives - together.

Serbian First Responders operate where it matters most – in the first critical minutes after an accident, when a quick response can save a life. Our work is voluntary, but to train new members, acquire equipment, and maintain a network ready for emergencies, we need your support. Every donation, no matter how small, directly strengthens our ability to provide aid, spread life-saving knowledge, and nurture a culture of solidarity across Serbia. Support our mission and become part of a chain of kindness standing for humanity.
